Massage Therapy
What Is Medical Massage?
As opposed to the stereotypical walk-in massage experience, medical massage is prescribed as a treatment by your doctor or primary care provider. The main focus of medical massage is to resolve issues in a specific area of the body as prescribed by the physician, you can expect a variety of techniques and modalities will be used to treat the problem area and surrounding area.
Often times pain felt in a specific area of the body can actually be referred pain that is coming from a different part of the body. This is often the case with neck, shoulder, and upper back pain.
Medical massage is also an incredible tool that allows patients to become more aware of areas of the body that are holding tension, and with time they can focus to relax those troublesome tense areas on a daily basis.
Deep Tissue Massage
This method of massage is excelling for relieving trigger points in the body. Trigger points are areas of the bodies soft tissue that are responsible for pain symptoms. The pain that is felt from trigger points can be reduced with techniques such as deep tissue massage, as well as dry needling. These trigger points are muscle “knots” which will vary in intensity depending on the person, and over time are responsible for a variety of pain symptoms.
Deep tissue massage is excellent for eliminating pain from trigger points, which is often a key factor in migraines, headaches, neck pain, back pain, and shoulder pain.
Other deep tissue massage techniques involve special tools, known as Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). IASTM is an excellent massage technique that breaks up soft tissue adhesions and scar tissue which helps promote healthy blood flow to the problem area.
Benefits Of Massage
Overall, the effects of medical massage therapy are dependent on the results that the patient is looking to achieve. One of the key factors with massage therapy is the ability to interrupt the transmission of pain signals to problematic areas. The levels of endorphins in the body and other specific pain relieving neurochemicals in the bloodstream are increased when a patient receives massage therapy, aiding in reduction of pain symptoms.
The circulatory system also benefits from this type of massage because of the increased quantity and quality of blood that will flow to various body parts after the treatment is received. This increased circulation is also beneficial for keeping a healthy heart rate and reducing blood pressure, because the heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood through the body.
Medical massage has become a crucial part of integrated medical treatment over the past few years.
Mayo Clinic data shows that some of the most sought after benefits of massage therapy are:
- Upper back and neck pain
- Joint pain
- Sports injuries
- Nerve pain
- Soft tissue strain or injury
- Low back pain
- Myofascial pain syndrome
