What To Expect During My Annual Physical?
At South Pointe Healthcare, our primary care physician acts as our patients healthcare partner, and having annual physical examinations is a great way get to know your provider – and allows your provider to familiarize with you and your health goals.
When visiting for an annual physical exam, the focus is on overall wellness and preventative care that is needed to keep you healthy. Beyond learning more about your lifestyle, your provider will address anuy concerns or answer questions that you have about treatment plans, current medication regimen, and any other health issues
Annual physical exams may vary between individuals due to age and stage of life, but regardless the following is typical during all exams.
- Medical History – We will ask the patient about current lifestyle habits, including addressing any health concerns that the patient currently has.
- Vital Signs – Standard vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperate will be checked and recorded
- Heart & Lung Examination – Using a stethoscope, our doctors will listen for any abnormalities in heartbeat and breathing.
- Skin Examination – General once over of the body checking for any abnormal spots, lesions, moles or rashes.
- Head / Neck / Abdominal Examination – Doctor uses hands with light pressure to check for any painful sensitivities or abnormalities, which could be an early sign of larger health issues.
- Laboratory Work – Depending on the individual, we may take blood samples to analyze for blood sugar, cholesterol and other common physical examination findings.
Assessing Overall Health
Depending on each individuals specific risk factors including age, lifestyle and family history your practitioner may order a variety of screenings and tests such as:
- Blood Pressure Screening – measures the force of the patients blood against their arteries, a reading of 130/80 is the normal baseline.
- Cholesterol Screening – this test measures the amount of cholesterol in your blood, which is related to the individuals diet. Healthy patients with no risk factors have a reading of <200 mg/dL and is considered normal.
- Blood Glucose Screening – measures the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. Depending on your results, our providers may recommend was to lower your blood glucose levels.
- Body Mass Index – (BMI) calculations use your height and weight to determine if you are in a healthy range, a BMI that is considered normal is between 18.6 to 24.9.
Updating Medical Records
Many factors can change in the year since your last annual physical examination, which is why it is important for your provider to keep your medical records up to date.
This is the best possible time to let your provider know about changes that could have an affect on your health!
- Social History – Our provider will ask general questions about your lifestyle such as smoking habits, sexual activity, alcohol intake, and drug use. It is important to be honest with your provider about these items, as we are only here to help you stay health, not to judge your personal choices!
- Allergies – Medication, food and seasonal allergies have the capability to cause serious reactions, which is why it is important to tell your doctor if you think you have developed a new allergy.
- Medication Changes – Your provider will ask about current vitamin, supplement, prescription and over the counter medications along with dosage information.
- Family History – Providers inquires about any family members that have developed new health conditions provides valuable insight about genetic pre dispositions to certain diseases.
